In demokratischen Gesellschaften werden Wahrheiten und Werte im Diskurs verhandelt. Multimodale Kommunikationsformen – etwa Karikaturen, Memes, Reels oder VR-Szenarien – prägen diese Diskurse zunehmend. Ihre wachsende Macht trägt maßgeblich dazu bei, dass demokratische Werte und Strukturen unter Druck geraten. Im Zentrum der Tagung stehen die Mechanismen multimodaler Kommunikation, die verstärkt für populistische, extremistische und manipulative Zwecke instrumentalisiert werden. Diese ‚semantischen Kämpfe‘ um Sprache und Deutungshoheit können demokratische Prozesse untergraben und den gesellschaftlichen Frieden gefährden. Die Tagungsbeiträge diskutieren, wie narrative Strategien in verschiedenen medialen Formaten funktionieren, welche Rolle Text-Bild-Kombinationen in politischen Diskursen spielen und wie diese gezielt zur Desinformation genutzt werden.
In democratic societies, truths and values take shape through public debate. Multimodal communication—whether in cartoons, memes, short-form videos, or virtual-reality scenes—now plays a decisive role in steering those discussions. The growing reach of such formats is placing democratic norms and institutions under mounting strain. This conference explores how multimodal messages are harnessed for populist, extremist, and manipulative ends. These ‘semantic battles’ over language and interpretive authority risk eroding democratic procedures and unsettling social cohesion. Presentations will analyse the narrative techniques deployed across media, the political weight of text-image pairings, and the ways they are systematically weaponised for disinformation.
Aufbau / Structure
Die Tagung verfolgt einen inter- und transdisziplinären Ansatz, der Sprach-, Kultur-, Sozial-, Medien-, Geschichts- und Bildungswissenschaften miteinander verbindet. Da das Phänomen multimodaler Kommunikation global wirksam ist, berücksichtigt sie verschiedene Sprach- und Kulturräume – mit Fokus auf deutsche, französische, italienische und lateinamerikanische Kontexte. Sie beleuchtet zentrale Fragestellungen aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive und ist eng mit schulischer Praxis verknüpft. Eine eigens organisierte Table Ronde bringt Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler mit Vertretungen des Kultusministeriums, des Münchner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung sowie Lehrkräften zusammen, um konkrete didaktische Transferformate zu entwickeln.
The conference takes an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, combining linguistics, cultural studies, social sciences, media studies, history and education. Since the phenomenon of multimodal communication has a global impact, it takes into account different linguistic and cultural areas, with a focus on German, French, Italian and Latin American contexts. It highlights key issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and is closely linked to school practice. A purpose-organised round table brings together academics, representatives of the Ministry of Education, the Munich Center for Teacher Education and teachers to develop concrete didactic transfer formats.
Zielsetzung / Objectives
Die Tagung verfolgt das Ziel, Impulse für ein wissenschaftlich fundiertes Konzept zur Förderung kritischer Diskursfähigkeit und multimodaler Textkompetenz zu geben – mit starker Transferorientierung für die schulische Bildung. Dieser Wissenstransfer steht im Zeichen der ‚Third Mission‘, also der Verantwortung der Wissenschaft, gesellschaftliche Relevanz zu entfalten.
One of the central aims of the conference is to lay the groundwork for a research-based, pedagogically sound framework for fostering critical discourse competence and multimodal text literacy – especially with a view to its applicability in school settings. This commitment to knowledge transfer is guided by the principles of the ‘Third Mission’ of academia: the responsibility to translate scholarly insight into socially relevant educational processes.
